The Faculty of Natural Sciences at Ulm University invites applications for a W1 Assistant Professorship (with Tenure Track to W3, without Chair responsibilities) in Organic Chemistry, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) under the Excellence Strategy. The position is available from January 1, 2027.
We seek an outstanding early-career researcher with a promising academic profile and internationally recognized research achievements in the field of sustainable organic materials or sustainable organic synthesis and methodology development, potentially in combination with accelerated materials or methods development through high-throughput experimentation, computational chemistry, and data science.
The candidate's research is expected to contribute significantly to the Cluster of Excellence Post-Lithium Storage (EXC 2154 POLiS) and to strengthen the University's interdisciplinary research focus on (electro)chemical energy conversion and storage as well as the strategic profile area "Green Energy". Connections to the University's additional profile areas "Quantum Science and Technology," "Life Long Health," and/or "From Data to Knowledge" are highly desirable.
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration within Ulm University, particularly within the POLiS Cluster of Excellence. Collaboration within the inter-university platform CELEST (Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm-Karlsruhe), the Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR 234 CATALIGHT, and with non-university research institutions such as the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) for Electrochemical Energy Storage and/or the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) is also encouraged.
The professorship will be affiliated with the Institute of Organic Chemistry II and Advanced Materials, which, together with the CELEST Green Energy Lab Ulm, provides an outstanding research environment and is an integral part of the POLiS Cluster of Excellence.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute appropriately to teaching in the full breadth of Organic Chemistry within the University's chemistry degree programs, as well as to service teaching (to other disciplines) in Organic Chemistry. Courses will be taught in English and preferably also in German. The position also includes the further development of teaching concepts, including the use of digital teaching methods, and active participation in the training of doctoral researchers, for example within the EES Academy. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to participate actively in faculty and university administration and academic self-governance. During their appointment at Ulm University, the successful candidate is expected to establish an independent research profile through the successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding and active participation in externally funded collaborative research projects.
Employment is as a temporary civil servant or as an employee; as a rule, for a term of 6 years.

The appointment requirements are governed by § 51 of the Baden-Württemberg Higher Education Act (LHG) and include: a completed university degree, demonstrated teaching aptitude, a doctoral degree (PhD), and additional academic achievements appropriate to the position. If the applicant has been employed as an academic staff member before or after completion of the doctorate, the combined duration of the doctoral and employment phases should generally not exceed six years. Extensions granted under § 2(5), sentence 1, nos. 1 and 3–5 of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG) are not counted toward this limit. § 2(3), sentence 1 WissZeitVG applies accordingly.
