The University of Lübeck stands for excellent research and teaching. We are a modern foundation university with thematically focused degree programs. Under the motto “Focus on Life,” we offer a range of courses in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology, as well as medicine, health sciences, and psychology.

The Institute for Medical Informatics (Director: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Heinz Handels) in the Department of Computer Science/Engineering at the University of Lübeck is seeking applications for a

W1 TT W2 professorship in Data Synthesis and Foundation Models in Medicine

to be filled as a fixed-term civil service position, initially for three years with an option to extend for an additional three years, leading to a tenured W2 position upon a positive evaluation. Please note Sections 62 and 64 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein (HSG).

Your responsibilities:

We are seeking an outstanding candidate who has demonstrated excellence in research in one of the fields of data synthesis or foundation models in medicine and is capable of representing this field in both research and teaching. To this end, the successful candidate must possess a PhD and a track record of outstanding scientific achievements in one of the following areas:

  • Generation of synthetic textual, tabular, or multimodal medical data
  • AI-based analysis using foundation models in medicine

Scientific expertise and experience in the areas of multimodal language and text processing using Large Language Models, AI-based methods for the semantic integration and structuring of medical data, and methods for making medical data usable for research purposes while ensuring data security are advantageous. Preference will be given to applications that demonstrate not only outstanding scientific achievements but also a successful track record of securing external funding, participation in interdisciplinary research consortia, and experience collaborating with clinical and industrial project partners.

Applicants that expand the existing expertise at the Institute for Medical Informatics with complementary or new areas of research focus, as well as those that open up new clinical application areas in collaboration with medical professionals, are explicitly welcome. The establishment of an independent research group at the Institute for Medical Informatics (-luebeck.de) is expected.

The professor will be expected to contribute to the teaching curriculum offered by the Section of Computer Science/Technology, with a primary focus on the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Medical Informatics.

As an interdisciplinary research-focused university, the University of Lübeck operates without traditional faculty boundaries. This facilitates the desired close interdisciplinary collaboration in research and teaching with colleagues from the fields of medicine and the life sciences.

Women will be given priority consideration if they have equivalent qualifications, competence, and academic achievement. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are suitably qualified. We expressly welcome applications from people with an immigrant background. We do not require the submission of photographs or application photos and therefore ask that you refrain from including them.

Please submit your application, including the standard documents such as your resume, copies of your academic transcripts, academic background, list of publications (broken down into peer-reviewed original papers and review articles), teaching and research plan, and a list of external grants you have secured.
