The professorship is dedicated to the teaching and development of design in landscape architecture. This includes design as well as spatial, functional and procedural dimensions. The future post holder will represent the subject ‘Landscape Architecture | Design’ comprehensively in research and teaching in the sense of sustainable and future-oriented landscape architecture and open space development.

We are looking for a personality who will fulfil the diverse requirements of the position in the context of the Institute of Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning at the interdisciplinary Department of Architecture Urban Planning Landscape Planning. The candidate will have excellent, conceptually strong achievements in the design of public open spaces and an independent, built landscape architectural work with high visibility in the professional discourse. This profile integrates aspects of sustainability with the resulting aesthetics and contributes to the innovation and future viability of the discipline. In its research, the professorship develops innovative design approaches and reflects on design practices and current trends in landscape architecture.

Within the framework of teaching, the professorship imparts methods, content and tools of design, as well as the diverse aspects of landscape architecture in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. In the six-semester Bachelor’s degree programme in Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning, the fundamental breadth of landscape architectural design is to be conveyed as foundational knowledge. In the four-semester research-oriented Master’s programme, the Chair offers teaching formats, final theses and qualification projects. Teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes is conducted in German. Candidates are expected to be willing to contribute to the development of an English-language teaching programme.

In research and teaching, the Chair forms a strategic link to the disciplines of Architecture and Urban Planning, thereby representing a cornerstone in the diverse connections between the subjects and in the interdisciplinary ethos of Department 06 ASL (Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Planning).

Committed participation in academic self-administration is considered a matter of course.

Requirements:

  • A degree in landscape architecture or a comparable course of study with a demonstrable focus on landscape architecture.
  • Outstanding achievements in design, demonstrated by an independent, built landscape architecture project of high design quality.
  • Outstanding research or practice-oriented contributions to the academic discourse on landscape architecture, which have led to significant advances in design research, as evidenced by relevant academic publications.
  • Innovative design approaches and critical reflection on design methods, particularly regarding aspects of sustainability and the resulting aesthetics.
  • Excellent connectivity, e.g. demonstrated through international collaborations in academia and practice.
  • Relevant academic teaching experience and expertise in university pedagogy.
  • Willingness to teach courses in both German and English.

The following are considered an advantage:

  • international practical experience,
  • experience in design incorporating aspects of biodiversity, circularity or climate adaptation,
  • experience in securing and implementing externally funded projects,

We offer the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary department with a collegial environment that is keen to explore an integrated approach to the societal challenges facing architecture, urban and landscape planning. The professorship has the opportunity to play an active role in the newly established Kassel Institute for Sustainability. Collaboration with other departments in research and teaching, particularly the departments of Open Space Planning and Landscape Architecture | Technology, is fundamental.

For participation in the Master’s specialisation in Urban Planning, collaboration with the departments of ‘Urban Planning’ at the Institute for Urban Development and ‘Design in an Urban Planning Context’ at the Institute of Architecture is also required.

  • Concept for future research and teaching priorities within the department (summary of 1–2 pages each)
