The University of Kassel is a modern and growing University with round about 21.000 students. The university’s wide range of expertise covers subjects in the natural, applied, cultural and social sciences.
In the Department Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, Department of Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Braun), the following position is expected to open on June 1, 2026:
Scientist (m/f/d) for the Development of Innovative Methods for Turbulence Measurements Using Super-Long-Range Scanning Lidar, EG 13 TV-H, fixed-term, full-time (currently 40 hours per week)
Application deadline:
26.05.2026
Date of hire: 01.06.2026
vacancy number: 39241
The position is initially limited until May 31, 2029, in accordance with § 2 (2) WissZeitVG. The opportunity to pursue a doctorate is provided.
The appointment is intended to take place within the framework of the third-party funded project “Collaborative Project: UPGRADE – Super Long Range Laser Anemometry for the Determination of Offshore Wind Conditions; Subproject: Development of Innovative Methods for Turbulence Measurement with Super-Long-Range Scanning Lidar,” subject to the approval of the project.
Are you interested in advancing the energy transition and in the precise measurement and modeling of offshore wind conditions, particularly turbulence. Are you passionate about the further development of measurement technology and models for wind energy applications? The UPGRADE project offers a great opportunity to pursue research in these fields. The goal of the UPGRADE project is to improve and test super-long-range scanning lidars (SLRSLs) for the first time for use in wind energy, in order to determine wind conditions — including turbulence — over long distances with high accuracy and to qualify them for the development and operation of large offshore wind farms.
The University of Kassel, together with the project partners, is co-developing hardware and software components as well as special algorithms for improved turbulence measurements. This includes, among other things, the development of modeling approaches and algorithms to improve turbulence measurements with lidar, the analysis of single- and dual-Doppler measurements over very long distances, the quantification of measurement uncertainties and the evaluation of the potential of the new methods for use in the wind energy industry. The position also comprises experimental fieldwork to conduct measurement campaigns. In the future, the developed methods are to be incorporated into the standardization processes of the International Electrotechnical Commission and made available for further applications (e.g., wind farm optimization, service life extension).
