Research Associate for the Project “Cluster of Excellence ‚CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter‘ - Quantum simulation of frustrated spin models in 3D” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Institution: Cluster of Excellence „CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter“ (photon and nanosciences)

Salary level: EGR. 13 TV-L

Start date: as soon as possible, fixed for a period of three years (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).

Application deadline: 2026-08-10

Scope of work: part-time

Weekly hours: 75 % of standard work hours per week

Your responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Quantum simulation of complex many-body systems employing Rydberg atoms in optical tweezers has developed into a vivid field of research recently. In our project we work towards the realization of a flexible optical tweezer-based Rydberg quantum processor employing alkaline-earth like Yb atoms (AEA). We want to take advantage of the possibilities AEA offer over the widely used alkali atom-based Rydberg tweezer experiments like an optical clock transition for sophisticated shelving and manipulation schemes and the option of triple magic optical trapping to significantly enhance Rydberg coherence times. Your tasks will include e.g. study and characterization of fast and coherent single-photon Rydberg excitation from the metastable 3p manifold and implementation and characterization of Rydberg blockade fidelity for a variety of Yb Rydberg series. Moreover, different approaches to realize well-controlled 3D arrays of single atoms shall be devised.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

A Master of Science in experimental physics with excellent grades is required. The successful candidate should have experience in the field of neutral atoms e.g. generation of optical tweezer arrays, Rydberg excitation and cooling and manipulation of Alkaline-Earth atoms. Profound Python skills with focus on computer control of complex experimental set ups as well as deep data analysis are required.
