Research Associate for the Project “Cluster of Excellence ‚CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter‘- Quantitative detection of nanoparticles using X-ray methods and mass spectrometry” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Institution: Cluster of Excellence „CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter“ (photon and nanosciences)

Salary level: EGR. 13 TV-L

Start date: as soon as possible, fixed for a period of three years (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).

Application deadline: 2026-09-17

Scope of work: part-time

Weekly hours: 75 % of standard work hours per week

Your responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue further academic qualifications outside of their work responsibilities.

Quantitative analysis of nanoparticles and active substances in cells and tissues using mass spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence. Biological cells take up nanoparticles and active substances. Quantifying these, particularly in tissue, is not straightforward. Analytical methods are to be developed that enable quantitative detection. One such method is mass spectroscopy, whereby the extraction and purification of the particles and active substances from the tissue are crucial for sample preparation. Another is imaging using synchrotron-based X-ray methods. Radiation damage plays a role in this context. A measurement chamber is to be set up in which absorbed nanoparticles and active substances can be imaged in vitro in situ using X-ray methods (e.g. X-ray fluorescence). As part of public awareness activities for the Cluster ‘CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter’, active participation in setting up an experiment as part of public events is also expected.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

Candidates are required to have:

  • a Master’s degree in chemistry, physics or nanoscience
  • experience
  • in detecting active substances in biological samples using mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)
  • in the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles
  • in supervising school pupils as part of work experience placements or similar at a university
  • sufficient command of German (required for supervising school pupils) and English (for interacting with international group members)
  • basic knowledge of nanobiotechnology (synthesis, interaction of nanoparticles with cells) and basic knowledge of synchrotron radiation as applied in the nanosciences
  • skills and joy in building up equipment (measurement chamber)
