Remuneration EG 13

ID 18026WM21

Start of employment 01.10.2026

Application deadline10.08.2026

Scope fulltime and fixed-term until 30.09.2029

The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (ITT) at Hamburg University of Technology is a fast-growing research institute focusing on experimental and simulation-based research on complex energy systems. We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to work on second-law-based analysis and design of packed-bed thermal energy storage systems. The research is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the Priority Programme “Carnot Batteries: Inverse Design from Markets to Molecules” (SPP 2403).

The successful candidate will use system-level simulation (Modelica) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD, OpenFOAM) to investigate the charge and discharge processes in packed-bed thermal storage systems. Based on the simulation results, a second-law analysis will be performed, and an inverse design model will be developed to identify suitable material combinations and system configurations.

The position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic research environment and collaborate with leading research institutes in Germany through the DFG SPP program. The project is a perfect opportunity to contribute to the ongoing energy transition and TU Hamburg's mission "engineering to face climate change".

YOUR TASKS

  • Simulations of the transient charge/discharge processes of packed bed storage systems
  • Second-law-analysis of the simulation results to understand the loss mechanisms
  • Development of an inverse design model
  • Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences
  • Contribute to the Institute beyond the dedicated project work

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies (masters degree or equivalent), in particular in the subject mechanical engineering, process engineering or other relevant disciplines

Desired knowledge and personal skills

  • Expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
  • Good experiences in system simulation or (and) CFD simulation
  • Solid knowledge in energy systems
  • Excellent communication skills in English and (or) German
  • The ability to work independently within an interdisciplinary research team

OUR OFFER

  • A job in an interesting, friendly and appreciative working environment
  • Intensive induction/ onboarding
  • Flexible and family-friendly working conditions
  • Possibility of mobile working
  • 30 day vacation per year

At the heart of TU Hamburg’s research, teaching and transfer of technology is the guiding principle of developing technology for people. The TU Hamburg sees itself in this context as a family-friendly and sustainable university with high performance and quality standards that strives for excellence in all its research fields. Interdisciplinarity, innovation, regionality and internationality are binding principles in our actions. With currently around 8.000 students, 110 professors and 1.650 employees, the TU Hamburg is characterised by short decision-making processes and close cooperation between the board, the institutes, the deans of studies, the research areas and the administration. We identify ourselves with a modern leadership culture and cultivate appreciative interaction.
