The 3,800 members of our academic, technical and administrative staff – including more than 400 international scientific staff – work together to ensure that our university successfully fulfils its mission of providing excellent teaching for our approximately 16,000 students and 100 trainees.

We focus our research on mobility, metrology, engineering for health, and the future city. Our core disciplines include a comprehensive engineering division and a strong natural sciences division, closely linked with business sciences, social sciences, educational sciences, and the humanities.

Our university is located at the heart of one of Europe’s most research-intensive regions. We cooperate closely with the more than 20 internationally renowned research institutions in our vicinity and our network extends to our partner universities in Germany and all over the world, with whom we maintain strong relationships.

We offer a

W3 Professorship for Mobile Machines and Commercial Vehicles

The position is scheduled to be filled by October 1, 2026, or earlier.

Your responsibilities

The Institute for Mobile Machines and Commercial Vehicles is a core institute that delivers fundamental and application-oriented contributions to the field of automotive engineering and mobile machines in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Lower Saxony Research Center for Vehicle Technology (NFF). The professorship is assigned to the TU Braunschweig's core research area "Mobility" and also collaborates with other core research areas on an interdisciplinary basis. The institute has excellent links with federal research institutions through joint projects and courses. Mobile machinery and heavy commercial vehicles, as well as their application systems, form the technological basis for research. Building on existing expertise, future research and teaching can focus on the following areas:

  • Development and evaluation of new functions and designs for mobile machines and heavy commercial vehicles
including basic research on process technology with DEM, design of new machine and vehicle structures, holistic evaluation with process simulation
  • Innovative drive systems for vehicle and process drive
including cross-domain, data-networked drive systems, intelligent operating strategies, mobile hydraulic circuits, degradable hydraulic fluids
  • Digital networking and intelligent automation, agricultural robotics
including environmental perception in complex environments, AI applications, process, machine, and system automation, safety concepts, communication in multi-machine systems

The successful candidate (f/m/d) will be expected to manage an institute with approximately 30 employees and to conduct research and teaching in the above-mentioned areas. The diverse research topics are to be developed using engineering methods based on systemic approaches. The use of domain-specific software tools combined with experimental investigation is just as much a matter of course as the holistic evaluation of the results in the context of their application. An extensive software pool is available for this purpose, and the institute has numerous mobile and stationary test benches and a very well-equipped workshop.

In teaching, basic courses are expeted to be offered for all bachelor's and master's programs in the faculty, as well as advanced courses for students, particularly in the fields of automotive engineering and mobile systems, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, industrial engineering, battery and hydrogen technology, and sustainable engineering for products and processes.

The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/hochschulentwicklung). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

Our expectations

  • Proven expertise in the field of mobile machinery and heavy commercial vehicles from relevant activities in industry, at universities, or at research institutions
  • Ability to enthusiastically implement, coordinate, and manage interdisciplinary research projects and networks
  • International professional experience and a very good command of the English language
  • Willingness to teach in German and English in bachelor's and master's degree programs
  • Willingness to participate in the self-administration of the university
  • Willingness to contribute to the internationalisation of the university and to participate in and take on management tasks in international research
  • Willingness to work closely in research and teaching with working groups from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and other faculties at TU Braunschweig, and in particular within the Lower Saxony Research Center for Vehicle Technology (NFF) and the core research area "Mobility".
  • Willingness to cooperate with federal research institutes in the central research areas of the professorship (Julius Kühn Institute, Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Leibniz Institute for Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie) and also instiutes of the Fraunhofer Society and the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR)
  • Experience with and willingness to acquire third-party funding and to manage and implement basic and application-oriented third-party funded projects

We encourage candidates (f/m/d) to apply if they fulfil the essential criteria.

International research and teaching experience, excellent command of the English language, as well as the ability and willingness to teach courses in English are a prerequisite.

We encourage candidates (f/m/d) to apply if they fulfil the essential criteria. Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.

Requirements, § 25 NHG

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation
