Faculty Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences

Department Architecture

We offer a

W3 Professorship for Constructive Design

The appointment is planned for 1st April 2028.

Your responsibilities

The Professorship of Architectural Design and Construction is one of the core professorships within Division C (Construction and Technology) of the Department of Architecture at Technische Universität Braunschweig and is associated with the directorship of the Institute of Architectural Design and Construction.

The professorship represents architectural design and construction as an integral part of the architectural design process. It understands construction, materiality, structural systems, building physics, and building technology as formative elements of architectural quality. Its aim is to develop innovative design approaches that translate spatial, constructive, material, and sustainability considerations into forward-looking architectural solutions.

In teaching, the professorship is responsible for architectural design and construction within the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Architecture. It promotes an integrative understanding of design in which construction and architectural design are conceived as a unified whole. Teaching is expected to be project-based, enabling students to use principles of construction as design tools and to integrate current issues of resource-conscious, circular, and climate-responsive building, as well as digital planning and fabrication processes, as integral components of the design process.

In research, the professorship makes innovative contributions to architectural design and construction and draws on the particular potential of interdisciplinary collaboration within the faculty and with the engineering disciplines at TU Braunschweig. Through collaborative research with national and international partners from academia, industry, and society, it contributes to the development of sustainable solutions for the transformation of the built environment.

The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

Our expectations

The successful candidate will be expected to further develop the Institute of Architectural Design and Construction, both academically and strategically, to expand national and international collaborations, and to play a visible role in shaping the international discourse on architectural design and construction through their own research and design contributions.

The position is intended for a candidate with strong leadership skills who can convincingly represent architectural design and construction in research, teaching, and professional practice. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a sound theoretical engagement with construction-based, resource-efficient, and sustainable design strategies, substantial professional experience as a practicing architect, and a body of architectural work of high design quality or a comparable academic reputation. In addition, candidates are expected to demonstrate strong pedagogical and didactic skills, experience in leading academic teams, a commitment to actively supporting early-career researchers, and a willingness to contribute to academic self-governance.

As part of the further development of teaching and research formats, close interdisciplinary collaboration is expected within the faculty, with the engineering disciplines, and with partners outside the university.

International research and teaching experience, excellent command of the English language, as well as the ability and willingness to teach courses in English are a prerequisite.

Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.

Requirements, § 25 NHG

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate, or the outstanding artistic work qualification
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation, or outstanding architectural work in project planning and realisation
