W3 Professor in Biotechnology

The appointment is planned for 1 October 2026

Your responsibilities

The professorship will play a key role in the redesign of the research direction of the Institute for Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Bioinformatics and will focus on the advancement of our understanding of metabolic bases of disease mechanisms in the context of infection and neurodegeneration. The use of modern methods of metabolome research for the elucidation of pathogenicity processes, for the development of biomarkers and metabolic therapies as well as for the production of corresponding therapeutics is desired.

The successful candidate should have an outstanding expertise and a strong and internationally competitive research profile in modern biotechnology and should have experience in the field of host-pathogen interactions, metabolic pathways and their optimization, and technological applications. Research in the field of neuro-inflammation would be desirable. The applicants should strengthen this focus by incorporating existing research networks. The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

Our expectations

Excellent scientific achievements and extensive experience in acquiring funding and managing staff are expected. The W3 professorship will also be an important part of the university's “Engineering for Health” core research area and therefore close active collaboration with the BRICS and PVZ research centers and local partners at the TU Braunschweig, such as the HZI, DSMZ, MHH and PTB, is expected.

The successful candidate will represent the subject in research and teaching and will be responsible for the research program of the department, teaching at the bachelor's and master's level, and supervising students and doctoral candidates. The W3 professorship is also expected to contribute fundamental content to the bachelor and master programs in biology and biotechnology. International research and teaching experience, excellent command of the English language, as well as the ability and willingness to teach courses in English are a prerequisite.

Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation
