Faculty of Humanities and Education

Institute of Music and Music Education

We offer a

W2 Professorship for Music Education

The appointment is planned for the 1st of October 2027.

Your responsibilities

The professorship is to be appointed within the framework of the Lower Saxony Alliance for Education and Teaching in direct cooperation between Technische Universität Braunschweig and the University of Hildesheim. The position will be advertised in close coordination with the advertised professorship in music education at the University of Hildesheim. The aim is for both professors to collaborate closely in both research and teaching.

The professorship assumes primary responsibility for teaching and research in music didactics at the Institute for Music and its Mediation and contributes to the further development of teacher education in music.

We are seeking a candidate who represents the field of music education /music pedagogy in its entire breadth in research and teaching, who investigates teaching and learning processes in school music education from a scholary perspective, and who integrates these findings into the ongoing development of curricula and teacher education programs.

The professorship will focus on the following areas, with due consideration of contemporary musical culture:

  • Teaching and learning in digitally mediated musical cultures, with particular attention to AI-based technologies (e.g. creative work with digital tools, platform and media practices, reflection on digital conditions of musical learning).
  • Music education in heterogeneous learning groups (e.g. inclusion- and diversity-sensitive didactics, transcultural perspectives, participatory equity).
  • Collaborative music making, singing and creative production as forms of learning (e.g. classroom music-making and ensemble work, creative production and performance practices, including hybrid and digitally supported formats).

The professorship will participate in cooperative initiatives within the regional educational and cultural landscape (e.g. with the Braunschweig State Theatre, the Braunschweig Cathedral Singing School, and the Wolfenbüttel State Music Academy) and will engage in collaboration with university and non-university partners, such as the Georg Eckert Institute – Leibniz Institute for Educational Media and the Braunschweig Competence Center for Teacher Training.

The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

Our expectations

We seek a candidate with a strong and clearly defined academic profile in music education/school music didactics who demonstrated an outstanding ability to integrate research, teaching, and transfer activities in the context of teacher education, particularly at the primary and lower secondary levels.

Essential selection criteria

  • An internationally visible research and publication profile in music education/music didactics, demonstrated through the quality and impact of scholarly work, with a clear connection to the professorship’s profile and at least one of the thematic focus areas outlined above.
  • Experience with, and willingness to acquire third-party funding (e.g. DFG, BMBF/BMFTR, teacher training programs), as well as potential for collaborative research projects.
  • Demonstrated expertise in higher education didactics and several years of relevant teaching experience in music education/music didactics (teaching degree); very good teaching evaluations and convincing teaching practice.
  • The ability to analyze music-related teaching-learning and educational contexts on a theoretical basis (e.g., cultural studies and social sciences), and—depending on the research question—to investigate these contexts using appropriate methodological approaches or to contribute to the development of teaching-related development and evaluation formats.
  • Practical experience in school contexts (e.g. several years of school teaching practice) and/or empirical education research
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration within the faculty (e.g. in the field of aesthetic education), as well as cooperation with schools, teacher training seminars, and cultural institutions; active participation in formats of further education and education-related transfer (e.g. via the Braunschweig Teacher Training Competence Center).
  • Engagement in academic self-administration and commitment to supporting early career researchers.

Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience in empirical research on music education and contemporary musical cultures.
  • Prior experience with, and willingness to further develop an aesthetic education profile within music teacher education programs in cooperation with other disciplines represented at TU Braunschweig.
  • Active involvement in national and international professional associations and scholarly networks (e.g. WSMP, BMU, AMPF, EAS, ISME), as well as experience with international cooperation and conference participation.
  • Leadership experience or coordination or of complex teaching, practice-oriented, or transfer-related formats (e.g. at project level).
  • Broad stylistic and, ideally, cross-genre artistic-practical experience

We encourage candidates (f/m/d) to apply if they fulfil the essential criteria.

International research and teaching experience, excellent command of the English language, as well as the ability and willingness to teach courses in English are a prerequisite.

Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.

Requirements, § 25 NHG

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation
  • At least three years of practical school experience or suitable teaching experience or experience in empirical research appropriate to the tasks.
