W1 Juniorprofessorship in Data Science in Business and Finance without tenure track

Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Fakultät is announcing five interrelated assistant professorships in the field of data science: Cyber Security (Computer Science), Civil Law, Technology and Mobility Law (Economics), Data Science in Business and Finance (Economics), Sociology, specializing in Social Structure, Data and Methods (Social Sciences), and Numerical Mathematics (Mathematics). The goal is to promote research and teaching through synergies in legal, economic, social, security-related, and mathematical issues in the field of data science.

Your responsibilities

The professorship in Data Science in Business and Finance is affiliated with the Institute of Finance at the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Fakultät and is integrated into the business and economics study programs of the department. In teaching, the professorship contributes to the Bachelor's and Master's programs in Technology-Oriented Management, Business Information Systems, Industrial Engineering, as well as Mathematics in Finance and Industry. In addition, participation in the English-language Master's program in Data Science is expected. The successful candidate should be able to teach students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds with heterogeneous methodological prior knowledge in quantitative and data science methods for applications in business and economics.

The responsibilities of the professorship include research and teaching in the field of Data Science in Business and Finance. The focus lies on the development and application of modern data science methods for the analysis of economic and business-related questions, with the willingness to apply these methods to financial contexts. The candidate is expected to develop data-driven analytical and decision-making approaches for business and economic problems and to transfer these to financial applications.

Possible research areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Application of machine learning methods in economic and business analysis and decision-making processes, including current developments (e.g., generative AI)
  • Analysis of structured and unstructured data (e.g., financial data, text data, regulatory documents)
  • Development of data-driven forecasting and decision models
  • Consideration of regulatory, ethical, and societal aspects in the use of data science
  • Applications from candidates with expertise in data science in business-related application areas are explicitly welcome, a willingness to apply these methods to financial questions is expected.

The professorship is expected to actively engage in interdisciplinary collaboration within the Department Business Science as well as with related disciplines, in particular Computer Science and Mathematics, and to contribute to the further development of the research focus Data Science at TU Braunschweig.

The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

  • Strong research orientation in the field of data science in business and economics, particularly with a focus on economic applications
  • Initial visible research achievements in data science methods, e.g., in the form of publications
  • A clearly identifiable independent research profile with connections to current developments in data science and quantitative economic research
  • Willingness to apply data science methods to financial questions and to develop corresponding research areas
  • Potential to acquire third-party funding and willingness to participate in interdisciplinary research projects
  • Teaching experience or proven didactic aptitude, particularly in quantitative or data science-related courses at the Bachelor's and Master's level
  • Willingness to contribute to foundational teaching and to develop innovative teaching formats, particularly in the area of data-intensive applications
  • Ability and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration within the Department of Business Science and with related disciplines (e.g., computer science, mathematics)
  • International orientation in research and teaching, including the ability and willingness to teach in English

International research and teaching experience, excellent command of the English language, as well as the ability and willingness to teach courses in English are a prerequisite.

Requirements, § 30 NHG

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • No more than four years should have elapsed between the final examination as part of the doctoral programme or any other achievement demonstrating particular aptitude within the meaning of Section 30 (2), first sentence, No. 3, and the application for the junior professorship.

Even though this is a full-time position, a part-time appointment may be possible upon request.

Applicants (f/m/d) who are 50 years or older at the time the appointment commences and who have not acquired permanent civil servant status (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit) will be employed with employee status (Angestelltenverhältnis).

The employment is initially for a period of three years in a temporary civil servant relationship, provided that the general service law requirements are fulfilled. In the event of a successful interim evaluation in accordance with § 30 Para. 4 S. 2 NHG, the professorship will be extended by a further three years.
