W2/W3 Professorship (open rank) in “General Zoology and Behavioral Ecology” (m/f/d)

The position will be within the Center for Animal Biology and Biodiversity.

The successful candidate will be appointed as either a civil servant or an employee under the W2 oder W3 salary scale. Depending on qualification an experience, a temporary appointment may also be considered.

Position profile

Applicants are expected to broadly represent research and teaching in general zoology and behavioral ecology. Research activities should include experimental, comparative or theoretical approaches and address ecological adaptation and fitness consequences in terrestrial vertebrates. A combination of research approaches on the origin of biological diversity and the effects of ecological conditions on social learning or on different communication and cognitive abilities is desirable. A willingness to closely cooperate in research with scientists from other TiHo institutions within TiHo’s biodiversity research focus is required. In addition to the independent acquisition of third-party funding, participation in existing research networks at TiHo as well as active involvement in the establishment of new research collaborations is expected.

The successful applicant is expected to participate in zoological teaching in degree programs at TiHo, including Veterinary Medicine, BSc Biology and MSc “Animal Biology and Biomedical Sciences” as well as in the PhD programs of TiHo. In particular, compulsory courses in zoology and behavioral biology in the Biology and Veterinary Medicine programs are to be taught.

Requirements

An international research profile with several years of experience in basic research in behavioral ecology is essential and must be demonstrated by excellent publications and independent acquisition of third-party funding. Additionally, experience with (inter-)national collaborations as well as with respectful an collaborative leadership and management skills are expected.

Further requirements include

  • a completed university degree in a life sciences or veterinary medicine program with a zoological focus,
  • a doctoral degree and a habilitation or equivalent academic achievement,
  • as well as pedagogical aptitude and teaching experience.

Evidence of teaching activities and results of teaching evaluations must be available and submitted together with proof of participation in higher education didactics training. Further requirements are regulated in § 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG).

The TiHo seeks to increase the proportion of women professors. Female candidates are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply (§ 21 para. 3 NHG). Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in cases of equal suitability.

Applications from scientists from abroad are expressly welcome. Proficiency in spoken and written German sufficient for teaching is required.
