Research associates (m/f/x) in scientific computing
The chair of numerical mathematics at the Ruhr University Bochum focuses on the development of efficient algorithms for solving problems in the natural and engineering sciences. A special emphasis is on hyperbolic conservation laws and high‑dimensional problems. We develop efficient numerical methods exploiting low‑rank tensor techniques and mixed‑precision algorithms. Moreover, we are interested in structure‑preserving numerical methods that are particularly adapted to the physical structure of the modeling equations, as well as in hybrid methods that couple models of different complexity for optimal efficiency. We are participating in the Collaborative Research Center on “Cosmic Interacting Matter” and are therefore especially interested in plasma‑physics applications in astrophysical environments as well as in magnetic‑confinement fusion. Recently, we have also turned to the Wetterich equation, an exact equation of the functional renormalization group, providing a systematic framework to study many‑body and field‑theoretic models such as classical and quantum phase transitions in solid‑state physics.
As a research assistant (m/f/x), you will independently develop new numerical schemes, implement and test their properties as well as analyze their numerical properties in challenging application problems. The opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications (a Ph.D.) is offered and encouraged.

Your profile:
- Applicants are expected to have an excellent degree, Master's or Diploma in a relevant academic field such as Mathematics, Computational Sciences, Physics when filling the position and at least a Bachelor's degree when applying.

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.

The load of teaching will be calculated according to § 3 of Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (state of North Rhine-Westphalia).
