Faculty of Physics and Astronomy :
Theoretical Physics IV

In order to fill a fixed-term position in part-time (29.8725 hours/week = 75%) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for 1

Research associate (m/f/x) within the CRC 1491 (29,8725 h)

The Chair of Theoretical Physics IV, in particular Plasma Astroparticle Physics, works at the interface of plasma and particle physics. Within the scope of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1491 ("Cosmic Interaction Matters - From Source to Signal") the Chair Theoretical Physics IV has a vacancy for a PhD position (m/f/x)

We are looking for a PhD student working on the theoretical development of a quantative model for superbubbles as sources of gamma rays and neutrinos. The candidate will be part of a team that develops a numerical model for cosmic-ray acceleration at a superbubble shockfront.

Scope: part-time
Duration: fixed-term, 3 years
Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by: 2026-08-24

Your tasks:

Leptonic and hadronic interactions will be included in the model to predict the gamma-ray and neutrino emissions. These will be compared to current data and the candidate can become active within the IceCube and/or CTAO collaborations to design an analysis to search for emissions from superbubbles. The candidate will be part of a larger team within the collaborative research center SFB1491 to investigate, if the signatures from cosmic rays, gamma rays and neutrinos can give evidence that superbubbles can contribute to cosmic ray sources in the energy range that goes beyond classical Galactic source candidates, i.e. in the knee to ankle region of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum.

Your profile:

  • Very good Master's degree in Physics
  • Previous experience on the master's level in the above-mentioned topics
  • Strong interest in contributing in an international consortium

We offer:

Collaboration in a committed and appreciative team, Employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the University Alliance Ruhr

Further information:

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
Your meaningful application should include the following documents: CV (with list of publications, if applicable); Cover letter including research statement (1 page) with summary of the Master's thesis and future research interest; Copy of Master's certificate including transcripts of records.
