Postdoc (m/f/x)
The Molecular Beam Epitaxy section, within the Spectroscopy of Condensed Matter Group, is seeking a highly motivated postdoc to join our team. You will be a key scientific contributor to the BMBF-funded flagship project QR.N. This project is a cornerstone of Germany’s national strategy to develop a scalable quantum communication infrastructure. Our research focuses on the synthesis and optimization of high-performance semiconductor components required for future quantum repeater nodes.
As an advanced researcher within the QR.N project, you will drive the development of semiconductor nanostructures optimized for quantum networking. You will contribute significantly to the technical evolution of our epitaxy systems, integrating innovative hardware modules to achieve the extreme material purity required for quantum repeaters. In this role, you will bridge the gap between theoretical requirements and experimental hardware reality while providing technical guidance and support to the research team.

Your tasks:
In this role, you will take on an advanced scientific position within the QR.N project, contributing as a specialist for quantum networking materials. Your responsibilities include:
- Component Design & Engineering: Playing a leading role in the architectural design of semiconductor heterostructures. You will translate the project’s requirements for quantum repeater nodes into viable epitaxial designs.
- High-Precision Synthesis: Advancing the growth of high-purity structures using state-of-the-art Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). You will focus on achieving the structural precision necessary for scalable quantum network components.
- Consortium Coordination: Overseeing the systematic analysis of material properties. You will synthesize complex data sets to ensure that project milestones are met and coordinate technical results with our national partners.
- Technical Innovation: Developing novel epitaxial methods and designing bespoke hardware upgrades. You will contribute to the implementation of innovative modules (e.g., in-situ monitoring) to improve the reproducibility and performance of quantum emitters.
- Infrastructure Support & Knowledge Transfer: Contributing to the operational excellence of the MBE facility. This includes the setup of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) equipment and the technical support of doctoral researchers, ensuring a high-level transfer of expertise within the lab.
Your profile:
- Mindset: We are looking for an ambitious researcher with a strong "can-do" attitude and a dedication to technical innovation.
- Education: A PhD in physics, material science, or a related field, with a focus on experimental solid-state physics or semiconductor technology.
- Expertise: Profound technical background in MBE. A solid command of UHV technology is an essential requirement.
- Technical Creativity: Demonstrated ability to design and implement custom hardware solutions. You are comfortable with both technical engineering and complex data analysis.
- Collaboration: Highly organized and capable of collaborating effectively within a national consortium. Excellent English communication skills are required to interface with project partners and provide guidance to the team.
- Commitment: You enjoy taking ownership of experimental setups and thrive on the challenge of maintaining sophisticated laboratory infrastructure.

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.

The place of work is Ruhr University Bochum.
If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
