Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology :
Chair of General Zoology and Neurobiology AG Behavioral Neuroscience

In order to fill a fixed-term position in part-time (25.8895 hours/week = (65%)) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for a

PhD position (m/f/x) Behavioral Neuroscience

The research group Behavioral Neuroscience investigates the multifaceted functions of the cerebellum beyond its classical role in motor control, with a particular focus on neurological and psychiatric disorders. By developing and studying transgenic mouse models of episodic and spinocerebellar ataxias, the team explores how specific cell types, signaling pathways, and molecular mechanisms contribute to disease progression. These studies aim to uncover targets for innovative therapeutic interventions. In addition, the group is interested in the cerebellum’s involvement in emotional and cognitive processes, especially in the regulation of fear and anxiety. Using a combination of genetic, optogenetic, and pharmacological approaches, they dissect the contributions of distinct neuronal populations and brain circuits, thereby providing new insights into how the cerebellum shapes and contributes to both behavior and pathology. The proposed project aims to investigate specific GPCRs expressed in the cerebellum whose endogenous ligands and physiological functions remain unknown (so-called orphan GPRs). Many orphan GPRs are associated with neurodegenerative and neurological conditions in both human and mouse. To help understand the physiological role of certain orphan GPRs, as well as identify their ligands and signaling pathways, a range of in vitro experiments will be conducted initially. As the project advances, individual orphan GPCRs will be studied in different mouse models to elucidate their contribution to both normal cerebellar function and neurodegenerative disease.

As a research assistant (m/f/x), you will independently and reliably prepare and carry out experiments, analyse the results and …

Scope: part-time
Duration: fixed-term, 3 years
Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by: 2026-02-02

Your tasks:

  • Molecular biology: Cloning of various plasmids and sensors using standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, restriction digest, ligation, etc.)
  • Cell culture: Culturing, passaging, transfection, and generation of stable GPCR-specific cell lines for in vitro studies; performing assays to identify GPCR signalling pathways
  • Biochemical assays: Co-immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, highperformance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.
  • Fluorescence microscopy: and analysis of fluorescent images; performing calcium imaging
  • Animal experiments: Conducting and analyzing behavioral experiments in mice; organ extraction followed by histological analyses (IHC, qPCR, Western blot)
  • Electrophysiology: In vivo recordings and analysis of Purkinje cell activity
  • Supervision: Support in supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses, as well as participation in specialized and advanced training modules
