PhD candidate (m/f/x)

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. The Department of Social Neuroscience at the Faculty of Medicine is part of the Research Center One Health Ruhr of the University Alliance Ruhr and investigates the neurobiological mechanisms of social processes in humans.

We are looking for a PhD candidate (payment according to E13 TV-L – 75 %) at the earliest possible date for 3 years. Ruhr University Bochum provides an outstanding interdisciplinary research environment and excellent opportunities for scientific collaboration. The laboratory combines neuroimaging methods, including fNIRS, mobile EEG, and fMRI, with brain stimulation techniques such as tDCS, psychophysiological recordings, and hormonal assessments to investigate the neural and biobehavioral mechanisms underlying social relationships. Within the broader research focus of the laboratory, potential projects may examine how synthetic relationships and interactions with AI-based agents influence the social brain, social bonding, emotional processing, and interpersonal behavior.

Your tasks:

  • Participation in research projects according to the focus of the department
  • Conducting experimental studies (recruitment of participants, data collection and analysis)
  • Presentation of the results at scientific conferences
  • Publication of the results in English-language publications
  • Co-supervision of research assistants and student theses
  • Teaching duties in accordance with the teaching obligations of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia

Your profile:

    • Very good university degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field
    • High level of commitment and the ability to work independently
    • Very good knowledge of methods and statistics
    • Very good knowledge of English
    • Interest in a scientific career
    • Knowledge of one or more of the project-relevant research methods (fNIRS/fMRI or EEG) as well as programming skills (Matlab, R, etc.) are an advantage, but not mandatory
    • Knowledge of German is an advantage, but not mandatory

Further information:

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E TV-L.
