(W-0063) Postdoctoral Scientific

THE POSITION

The MPI-M is now recruiting for a 2-year positions as

Postdoctoral Scientific (W-0063 | all genders)

in the Climate Physics department. The Earth System is continuous interaction of processes on different scales, exchanging momentum and energy among them. Km-scale climate models are emerging as new tools, in which atmospheric convection and ocean eddies are explicitly simulated. The successful candidate will use km-scale climate models developed in the to asses the changes in the large-scale feature of our climate under different global warming scenarios. Suggested but not exclusive topics are the changes in the position of the tropical rain bands as well as changes in the pathways of atmospheric energy.

The successful applicant will become a member of the Scale Interaction Modeling group, lead by , and will collaborate with

Responsibilities

  • Develop physical explanations for changes water cycle and the energy pathways in the tropical band under global warming scenarios in km-scale climate models
  • Lead first-author publication
  • Support the model evaluation and development of ICON

YOUR PROFILE

  • A PhD in Physics, Atmosphere/Ocean science, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields
  • Excellent analytical and programming skills, evidence of mechanistic thinking
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Experience working with storm-resolving/ ocean eddy-permitting/km-scale climate models
  • Strong knowledge in fluid dynamics with desirable knowledge in momentum analysis
  • Proficiency in English and/or German

OUR OFFER

  • Opportunities to co-supervise student
  • Participation in a challenging part of science in an international, intellectually stimulating environment
  • Access to complex workflows on the bleeding edge of what is technologically possible, as well as working for and with an open-source community
