The Faculty for the Study of Culture invites applications for a
Visiting Professorship of Iranian Studies (m/f/x)
commencing on 1 October 2026 as three-year fixed-term position.
The visiting professorship is located at the Department of Ancient and Modern Cultures and represents the field of Iranian Studies in the modularized BA and MA degree programs ‘Near and Middle East’. The visiting professorship is associated with a teaching load of nine semester hours per week. Applicants are expected to have at least two distinct research specializations as well as proven philological and historical expertise. The Iranian worlds have played an exceptionally significant role in the transregional exchange of concepts, institutions, and practices over the centuries. Applicants whose research considers, in addition to Persian, other languages of Iran —particularly Turkic-language literatures and sources—are especially welcome. Teaching may be conducted in German or English; knowledge of German is an advantage. The visiting professorship actively contributes to the academic life of the Institute of Near and Middle East, the Department, and the Faculty. It supports the Institute’s library in the selection and acquisition of relevant scholarly literature and assumes responsibilities in student advising.
The call is aimed at scholars affiliated at other universities, applying on the base of an outstanding academic or research-related practice. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career. Applicants are expected to have internationally visible achievements in research and teaching, as well as a willingness to participate actively in the further development of the field and in the design and implementation of research projects.
The appointment is made, subject to the applicable legal requirements, in a private-law employment relationship for a period of three years. The remuneration is based on the basic salary of pay grade W2, level 1.
