The Institute for Immunology is part of the of the LMU Faculty of Medicine. Research in the is dedicated to elucidating developmental and functional diversity of dendritic cell (DC) subpopulations in the context of viral infection and vaccination. We use yellow fever vaccination (YF17D) as a model of a highly efficient and long-lasting immune response in humans and want to understand how this response is initiated as a blueprint for development of effective anti-viral vaccines. We aim to define the early response to the vaccine virus in a human skin model and in mice. We ask which skin-resident cells at the injection site in the skin are infected and propagate the virus in context with the local type I IFN response and how dendritic cells get activated and present the viral antigens to T cells to promote optimal T cell differentiation.
