The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). The institute maintains further locations in Brandenburg (Dedelow, Paulinenaue) as well as in Hesse (Giessen, Witzenhausen, and Geisenheim).

As part of our research on the impacts of climate change on agricultural systems, we analyse large climate, remote-sensing and agricultural datasets. We are seeking a motivated student assistant to support the development of reproducible data and analysis workflows.

We are looking for someone for 40–80 hours per month (approx.. 10-20 hours per week) at our location in Müncheberg, starting as soon as possible and initially limited to a period of three months, as a

Student Assistant – Climate and Agricultural Data Analysis (f/m/d) 45-2026

Your tasks:

  • Obtain, preprocess and quality-check spatial climate, remote-sensing and agricultural datasets
  • Develop and document reproducible workflows in Python and/or R, where appropriate using Google Earth Engine
  • Perform spatiotemporal analyses, such as resampling, masking, aggregation and calculation of climate indicators
  • Prepare clear maps, figures, tables and structured intermediate outputs
  • Independently complete well-defined work packages and coordinate regularly with the research team

Your qualifications:

  • currently enrolled in a Bachelor`s or Master’s program in a university/Hochschule in Germany, for example in geoinformatics, geography, environmental or agricultural sciences, computer science, data science or a related field
  • Practical experience with Python or R for data processing and analysis, and willingness to learn additional tools quickly
  • Experience with raster, remote-sensing or GIS data; knowledge of Google Earth Engine is an advantage
  • Knowledge of Git, Linux and/or the development of reproducible workflows is desirable
  • Good English skills for reading technical and scientific documentation; German skills are an advantage
  • A careful, reliable and independent working style, including transparent documentation of data and code
