W2-Professorship Integrated Sensor Systems (m/f/d)

Your Profile

With the denomination Integrated Sensor Systems, the university recognizes the growing importance of intelligent, networked, and application-oriented sensor systems in modern technical systems. The goal of the professorship is to further strengthen the close integration of sensor technology, electronics, signal processing, transmission technology, and mechatronic system integration in teaching and research, and to expand interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with automation technology, energy technology, information technology, and related engineering disciplines.

We are seeking a dedicated individual with a proven academic background to represent the field of integrated sensor systems in teaching and applied research. You must hold a university degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, information technology, or a comparable engineering or natural science program. You must also demonstrate a particular aptitude for scientific work, evidenced by a qualifying doctoral degree. You will demonstrate your outstanding expertise through relevant scientific publications and an independent scientific profile.
You have at least five years of professional experience in the development and application of integrated sensor systems, preferably after earning your Ph.D., including three years outside the academic sector. You have worked in an industry-related environment with a focus on mechatronic applications (e.g., automation technology, condition monitoring, process sensor technology, robotics, automotive engineering, or similar systems) or related fields of measurement technology or embedded systems.

You also have in-depth knowledge and relevant professional and academic experience in the following areas:

• Data acquisition electronics and sensor interface
• Signal processing and sensor data fusion
• Experimental validation and prototype development of integrated sensor systems

The following are desirable:

• Knowledge of smart sensor systems
• Knowledge of data-driven methods
• Experience in securing third-party funding for projects

Your Responsibilities

The fields of specialization must be represented in both teaching and applied research. We consider excellent teaching skills and a high level of commitment to teaching to be just as essential as a willingness to participate in exchanges with our international partner universities and to offer courses in both German and English. In addition, we expect active participation in teaching basic courses, advanced courses, and special lectures on current research topics, as well as, where applicable, lectures in related fields and in part-time degree programs.

In addition, you will be responsible for:

• the development and establishment of an independent research profile that is integrated into the university’s research priorities
• application-oriented research in collaboration with partners from academia and industry
• active participation in doctoral programs and the support of early-career researchers
• the establishment and further development of laboratories and test setups for sensor technology, measurement technology, and mechatronic system integration, as well as their use in research and development activities
• active participation in the expansion of the technical infrastructure and in the further development of teaching and research programs
• active participation in university committees and in the academic self-governance of the Department of Applied Engineering, as well as involvement in the establishment, expansion, and further development of degree programs

Teaching and Research Environment

Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment with excellent opportunities to develop an independent teaching and research profile. The Department of Applied Engineering features modern infrastructure in the new laboratory building. There are numerous connections to the fields of drive technology, power electronics, automation technology, embedded systems, robotics, automotive engineering, materials testing, and the Smart Energy Lab. In addition, the cleanroom at the Zweibrücken campus – with its capabilities for micro and nano structuring as well as modern 3D technologies – can be utilized for research and teaching. A new cleanroom is scheduled to become operational in 2029.

The university has established partnerships with companies as well as with renowned universities and research institutions, including Max Planck and Fraunhofer Institutes. We actively support the strengthening of existing partnerships and the development of new research networks.

We expect strong teamwork and collaboration skills, as well as teaching expertise, to ensure high-quality, practical, and learner-centered instruction. You will design courses with a focus on learning objectives, utilize a variety of assessment and feedback formats, and continuously refine your teaching methods.

In addition, we require initiative, the ability to handle feedback professionally, and a high level of on-campus presence, as well as fluency in both German and English.

The eligibility requirements for professors are set forth in section 49 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. Appointment to the advertised position is possible only if the hiring requirements pursuant to Section 49, Paragraph 1, No. 4, Letter b (HochSchG) are met.

What We Offer

The position is to be filled as of September 1, 2027, at the Kaiserslautern campus of Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences in the Department of Applied Engineering. Full-time positions may generally be split, provided that this does not conflict with institutional needs.
Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences is a research-intensive university of applied sciences in the fields of computer science, engineering, business, design, and health.
