The Chair of Anglophone Literatures in a Global Environment at the Department of English and American Studies seeks to fill the position of a

PhD Position, Research Associate in Global Anglophone Literatures

commencing on 01.10.2026.

We offer a part-time position (50%, 20 hours per week) initially as a fixed-term appointment for three years (until 30.09.2029)

As a PhD candidate, you will have the opportunity of completing your doctoral thesis in the area of global literatures, teach into the program at the Department of English and American Studies, and engage in career development programs in the course of your studies.

Your responsibilities:

  • Work on your own scientific qualification project, that is a PhD project in the area of global Anglophone literatures towards a timely completion
  • Conduct interdisciplinary research
  • Support teaching in the English and American Studies Institute by teaching one seminar a semester
  • Support the Chair in administrative tasks

Your profile:

  • A Master’s degree in Anglophone literatures in English
  • A research proposal of 1000 words with a focus on one or more the following areas: environmental humanities, oceanic studies, post-humanist approaches, material cultures, Indigenous literatures, border studies, creative criticism
  • Experience or ability in teaching seminars in literary studies at a higher degree level
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have a proficient knowledge of German and the experience of studying/working in German universities
