Postdoctoral Researcher for DFG Project “Edition and Material Investigation of the ‘Cambridge Codex’ T-S 10 K 22”
Your workplace
The DFG-funded research project “Edition and Material Investigation of the ‘Cambridge Codex’ T-S 10 K 22” aims to produce a new critical edition (both print and digital) as well as a philological and material analysis of the oldest manuscript collection of Yiddish texts. The project is jointly led by Dr. Jan Hon (FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg) and Dr. Uri Zvi Shachar (Tel Aviv University) and is conducted in cooperation with the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit at Cambridge University Library.

We invite applications for a position of a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in Medieval Jewish Studies in the German branch of the project, based in Erlangen. The position is initially limited to one year. An extension for the remaining project period (up to a total of three years) is intended, subject to successful evaluation and continued project funding.

Your Tasks
We seek a researcher with expertise in Jewish literature of the Middle Ages and (late) antiquity. Their primary task will be the cataloguing of Hebrew and Aramaic sources of the Yiddish texts from the Cambridge Codex (Bible, Midrash, Piyyutim, Talmud). The researcher will co-author the edition, including commentaries, and contribute to parts of the accompanying collective monograph.

Your Profile
Required qualifications:

  • PhD in (Medieval) Jewish Studies or a related field
  • Excellent knowledge of Hebrew
  • Experience in the study of medieval Hebrew sources
  • Proficiency in English
  • High philological accuracy
  • Experience in the use of digital tools

Desirable qualifications:

  • Experience working with medieval manuscripts
  • Experience in editorial projects
  • Good knowledge of German
