NIC Science Manager

Supercomputers help us to find solutions to major social and scientific challenges. The Jülich Supercomputer Centre (JSC) operates one of the most advanced supercomputing infrastructures for scientific applications in Europe – including JUPITER, the first exascale supercomputer in Europe. Together with its partners, Deutschen Elektronensynchrotron (DESY, Hamburg), Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI, Darmstadt) and Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, Forschungszentrum Jülich operates the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC). The NIC’s mission is to design, promote and apply innovative computing strategies for the scientific community in Germany and Europe. In addition to cutting-edge high-performance computing, the NIC’s core innovation and research areas include, artificial intelligence methods and data-driven modelling, energy-efficient technologies, and disruptive technologies such as quantum computing and neuromorphic computing.

The NIC offers computing resources of its partners to its user communities via an excellence-based and comparative peer-review process. To organize and carry out its tasks, a NIC Coordination Office is located at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Your Job

Join our team in the Coordination Office to manage computing time resources and projects. Your tasks include:

  • Coordination of calls for computing time proposals and support for researches in the application and review process
  • Organization of technical and scientific review processes, including assignment of reviewers and evaluation of reviews
  • Drafting of proposals for the allocation of computing resources, in consultation with the chairs of the NIC Peer Review Board and the NIC Scientific Council
  • Responsibility for the administrative and organizational management of the NIC committees' tasks
  • Keeping track of project reports and performance indicators, such as project publications
  • Presentation of results at collaboration meetings, workshops, and conferences, and preparation of reports
  • Organization of NIC scientific events, such as the biennial NIC Symposium

Your Profile

  • You have a Master’s degree in the field of natural science, engineering, or a related discipline and, ideally, a PhD
  • You have a very good knowledge of the techniques and methods of computational sciences, ideally including AI
  • You are familiar with the landscape of computational research in Germany, even outside your own area of expertise
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of and scientific application programming for supercomputers is desirable
  • Experience in science and/or project management is advantageous
  • You have very good organizational skills with a scientific and service-oriented approach
  • You have a self-motivated personality
  • Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level according to the ), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level. In addition, your very good German skills round off your profile, also ideally supported by a certificate.
