Master Thesis - Design of active & passive temperature monitoring capabilities for solid target irradiation on accelerators
Institute of Fusion Energy and Nuclear Waste Management - Plasma Physics (IFN-1) at Forschungszentrum Jülich is aligned with the national and European fusion programs and is focused on supporting the engineering and developmental activities for a fusion reactor in Germany. One of the Institute’s main objectives is the topic of ‘plasma-wall interaction’, which is closely linked to the topic of ‘experiments to characterise materials and components for the first wall and the divertor’. This heavily involves the testing and qualification of materials for use in a reactor under fusion relevant conditions, through the strategic utilisation of the high temperature materials laboratory (HML) for irradiated material testing.
Your Job
At the Institute of Fusion Energy and Nuclear Waste Management - Plasma Physics (IFN-1), Forschungszentrum Jülich, proton irradiation is being investigated as a surrogate to emulate fusion neutron damage in first-wall materials. Join the team of END-USE project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) where you will be responsible for the improving the design, modelling and testing of an active temperature measurement system on the solid accelerator target irradiation station.
The thesis includes:
- Improving the design and efficiency of temperature measurement on the low-current target
- Using drafting and simulation tools such as CATIA and ANSYS
- Assembling and testing the sample holder
- Further design of a passive solution for high current target applications
Your Profile
- Bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled in a Master’s program in engineering, physics, or a closely related field
- Interest in the field of materials and work across disciplines including part design
- Willingness to work in radiation areas
- Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level according to the ), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level
