Data Software Engineer - Weather and Climate Data

Are you a skilled software engineer with a passion for weather and climate science? Do you love supporting cutting-edge science on domain-specific AI foundation models? Are you ready to organize and process large amounts of Earth system data as well as develop tools to improve the efficiency and user-friendliness of large-scale data handling? Then you may have found the right job to apply for. The at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) works with many national and international partners on novel machine learning models for weather and climate, such as the WeatherGenerator/EarthGenerator and develops high-end HPC and cloud data infrastructures to support this research.

Your Job

You will develop workflows and tools to facilitate the production and management of large-scale machine learning training and output datasets in the context of the European EarthGenerator project. Through this you will contribute to the ongoing development of our Jülich MeteoCloud turning it into an open, FAIR and performant service-oriented data infrastructure for Earth System data.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Development of tools for processing and managing high-volume meteorological and climate data sets
  • Development, deployment, and monitoring of web services that facilitate the discovery and access of Jülich MeteoCloud data
  • Support of EarthGenerator research through reliably managing and staging of relevant datasets on the JSC HPC systems

Your Profile

To become part of our interdisciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team, you should have:

  • A MSc degree (or BSc degree and extensive professional experience) in computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or meteorology, or similiar field of study
  • Strong programming skills in Python, including unit and integration testing and at least some experience with agentic AI software development
  • Experience in working on collaborative software projects including advanced git workflows
  • Good knowledge of Linux and ideally some experience with HPC systems and slurm
  • Experience with meteorological and climate data and data formats (NetCDF, Zarr, GRIB) or with advanced machine learning models (ideally both)
  • Some knowledge of, and experience in developing and deploying web services including containerisation
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to integrate into a diverse, interdisciplinary team.
