The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at Universität Hamburg and DESY.
Modern data science methods are applied to investigate the building blocks of the universe. The ATLAS group is strongly involved in the analysis of Higgs properties, as well as rare Higgs boson decays. There is also a strong involvement in the upgrade of the ATLAS silicon strip tracker for the HL-LHC.
The advertised postdoc position is primarily aimed at contributing to the search for Higgs decays to two leptons and a photon in the low dilepton mass region using the ATLAS Run 3 data and/or to the combination of Higgs cross sections and couplings using the ATLAS and CMS Run 2 data. However, other Higgs-related activities as well as involvement in detector upgrade or object performance can be discussed based on the candidate’s interest.
Postdoctoral research associates will become members of the Quantum Universe Research School (QURS), which provides academic and soft skills training, as well as career planning support. In addition, they will receive individual budgets to facilitate the attendance of summer schools and conferences, and to support other educational measures. Additional travel money for project-specific duties will be provided by the hosting research groups. Postdoctoral research associates may participate in the supervision of doctoral students and in the organization of the Cluster via an early career council.
Teaching duties currently comprise 4 teaching hours per week.
A university degree in a relevant field.
At least two years of research experience at the PhD level in data analysis at a particle physics experiment as well as in detector construction, operation or performance are required.
Additionally, the candidates should have excellent programming in C++ and/or python; excellent English in speaking and writing; teamwork abilities i.e. proven record of a successful collaboration in an analysis research project.
