The Chair of Thermal Turbomachines and Aeroengines in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum (LSTTF) is among the leading research groups in Germany in the field of experimental and numerical investigation of energy transformation systems. Cutting-edge numerical and experimental research is carried out, covering a broad spectrum of topics from classic turbomachinery aerothermodynamics, aeroelastics, two-phase flows and non-ideal compressible fluid dynamics with a strong focus on the design and optimisation of modern fluid energy machines to be employed in innovative cycles for power generation, energy storage and process engineering and using essentially non-conventional working fluids (such as steam, supercritical as well as transcritical CO2 flow, hydrogen, ammonia, organic fluids and mixtures).
Within the Collaborative Research Centre 129 “Oxyflame” (http://www.oxyflame.de/program.html ) a pre-, post-processing and computation suite will be built, which will provide a unique simulation environment where also experimental data of heterogeneous origin can be consistently elaborated and prepared for comparison with numerical results. Open-source tools will be extensively utilized to generate a framework which will guarantee accessibility to the complete set of functionalities and also the possibility for users to extend the codes by means of own modules and functions. The CFD-basis for the solver will be chosen to be OpenFOAM®. A large-scale, reacting two-phase system will be considered to build a flexible and scalable virtual testing environment also with the objective of supplementing gappy experimental data. For this purpose, the consistency and efficiency of the entire simulation process, from pre- to post-processing and solution, the optimisation of the solver for technical applications and the establishment of well-structured maintenance and quality-assurance procedures are among the activities to be carried out in the project. We look for highly motivated, enthusiastic and highly qualified research assistants, who will proactively engage in the proposed research. The CRC offers a highly international, multidisciplinary research environment with ample possibilities of further scientific and professional development.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
