The Leibniz Graduate School on Aging and Age-Related Diseases (LGSA) is a joint program of the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) and the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) in Jena. The school calls for applications for a PhD position in the research group “Microbiome and Metabolism” led by Dr. Clara Correia-Melo. The position will be available from April 2023.
The Leibniz Graduate School on Aging and Age-Related Diseases (LGSA) belongs to the Leibniz Association - a non-university research organization equivalent to the Max Planck Society and the Helmholtz Association.
The new research group of Clara Correia-Melo at the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute studies the metabolic crosstalk between cells in health and disease, with particular focus on aging. The group explores three main areas of research: 1) host-microbiome metabolic crosstalk during ageing; 2) metabolic microenvironment as a driver of disease initiation and progression and 3) therapy-induced metabolic microenvironment leading to disease persistence. Discoveries at all three levels will potentially translate into interventions that support better health through innovative metabolism-targeting therapies. The lab combines classical molecular biology methods with high-throughput quantitative multi-omics and systems biology approaches.
We are looking for highly motivated PhD candidates that are enthusiastic to explore the metabolic crosstalk of aging cells and their interactions with the microbiome. The start date is flexible but should be no later than Summer 2023.
Eligible are students that have obtained, or that will obtain within half a year, an academic degree comparable to a master’s degree or diploma in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry or a related discipline. We also invite applications of Biochemists and Biologists with a demonstrated interest in Bioinformatics.
Further requirements are:
• Experimental skills in cell and molecular biology
• Enthusiasm towards large-scale experiments and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics
• Productivity documented (excellent grades, internships or published research)
• Good communication skills for collaborative work
• Strong commitment and work ethic
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English
