Lung transplantation is the last resort for patients with end-stage lung diseases. Unfortunately, lung transplantation displays the worst long-term survival in all solid organ transplantation. Here, we aim to elucidate the contribution of specific mechanisms of immunoferroptosis as the primary cell death in chronically rejecting lung allografts. The aim of this position is to define the contribution of ferroptosis to the development of lung allograft rejection after lung transplantation by using conditional knockout mice in an experimental model and in human samples during the clinical follow-up of lung transplanted patients.
